Jeung-Hwa Park
RISD MFA '00 [Textiles]
An early career as a sportswear designer in Korea sparked Jeung-Hwa Park’s fascination with fabric; a few years later, in RISD’s Textiles Department, she discovered her medium: a combination of knitting, dyeing and felting. Her highly textured fabrics lend themselves well to apparel, becoming wearable art. The Providence-based designer thinks of her work in terms of Yin-Yang philosophy — a juxtaposition of tradition and innovation, the physical and the spiritual. “With this philosophy in mind,” she says, “I want to share the artistic sensibility of another culture and the expression of artistic emotion.” Park’s work has been acquired for the collections at the American Craft Museum and Fidelity Investments, and was showcased at the 2000 Kwangju International Biennale in Korea.
