Team Chihuly

Previous  Up  Next"
Dale Chihuly has developed many techniques over the past thirty years, including the fundamentals of a team. At the helm of the studio glass movement, he was instrumental in bringing glass out of the factories and into a more experimental environment. As the function and development of Chihuly’s work evolved into larger-scale series as well as installations, it became apparent that the roles and structure of the group would now transform into a team effort to create a vision led by the master. Teamwork is now a process integral in the world of glassmaking.

A unique work by Dale Chihuly demands the participation of up to twelve people. These people, who have varying skills and talents, are now distinguished in their own right. They exude a form of communication that is not always verbal, making the relationships between these artisans a masterpiece in itself. A rare glimpse into the creative process, Team Chihuly portrays the relationship and development between master glassblower Dale Chihuly and other renowned artists including Dante Marioni, Benjamin Moore, William Morris, and Richard Royal as well as Italian Glass Masters, Pino Signoretto and Lino Tagliapietra.

Chihuly, who introduces Team Chihuly, has contributed to revolutionizing the studio glass movement by expanding its original premise of the solitary artist to encompass the notion of collaborative teams and a division of labor within the creative process.

Dale Chihuly

RISD MFA ’68 [Ceramics]
Dale Chihuly (www.dalechihuly.com) is in the select group of artists who are celebrated by critics and the general public alike. After being introduced to glass at the University of Washington and studying ceramics at RISD, he went on to establish RISD’s renowned Glass program and teach there for 15 years. In 1968 a Fulbright Fellowship allowed him to further his study at the Venini glass factory in Italy — an experience that influenced his team approach to blowing glass. Honorary doctorates, fellowships from the NEA and a grant from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation are among Chihuly’s other awards, and his work is in more than 200 museums around the world. He is based in western Washington, where he co-founded Pilchuck Glass School in 1971.
