Pean Doubulyu
Liz Pannell [RISD ’81, Sculpture] + Jim Watkins RISD ’81 [Glass]
Watkins and Pannell founded their Pawtucket, RI, glass studio the year they graduated from RISD. Called Peàn Doubulyu (a phonetic play on the first letters of their last names), the studio designs and produces glassware with bold colors, surface texture and undulating shapes. Peàn Doubulyu attributes its success to a combination of visual and tactile elements stemming from Pannell’s background in graphic design and painting, and Watkins’ interest in vessels and form. Watkins is also a fine art glass sculptor whose work is exhibited widely and included in The RISD Museum’s collection. Peàn Doubulyu’s production glass — with such whimsical names as Wackie, Wavie and Dottie — is sold in department stores, museum shops and galleries nationwide.
