Dazzle Camouflage Print: Port 40
Dazzle Camouflage was used during World War I to confuse German U-boats
as to the speed and direction of ships. Maurice L. Freedman was a
district camoufleur for the 4th district of the U.S. Shipping Board in
Florida; his job was to take the dazzle plans and hire painters
(artists, house painters) to paint merchant ships accordingly. If the
plans needed to be adjusted, this was also his responsibility. Maurice
came to RISD after the war and studied drawing and painting. He worked
in Providence as a commercial artist and developed one of the first
versions of the game Battleship. While studying at RISD Maurice
donated his collection of plans and photos to the Fleet Library at
RISD. The collection was highlighted in a library exhibit and
symposium in 2009. Proceeds benefit the Fleet Library at RISD's
special collections and exhibitions.

Maurice L Freedman, RISD Alumnus, was the district camoufleur in Florida during World War I. After the war he attended RISD and donated the dazzle plans and photos. He was born in New York in 1898 and died in Massachusetts in 1983. We don’t know much about Maurice. Hoping someone knows more.
