Pat Steir Catalog
Pat Steir: Drawing Out of Line accompanies a major survey exhibition of drawings by this major figure in American art. that will be on view at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, February 19 - July 3, 2010. The show concentrates on five distinct bodies of work: minimal and intimate word/image drawings (1970-74); richly delineated, serial investigations of line (1975-77); heroically scaled wave drawings (1985-86); four distinct yet interrelated series of stunning vertical waterfall drawings (1991); and a new dramatic series of broad dark gestural marks that sometimes serve as a backdrop for delicate pastel grids (2008). The catalogue illuminates the development of Steir’s drawings and their interrelationship with her paintings and prints in an essay by Susan Harris. The second essay, by Jan Howard, examines Steir’s role as a writer and how the relationship between writing and drawing specifically has impacted the development of her work. All the drawing in the exhibition are illustrated in the 116 page full color catalogue.
