Roz Chast
RISD ’77 [Painting]
Roz Chast has risen to the top of the cartoon charts by playing off the angst of contemporary life. Having studied “Art with a capital A” at RISD, the year after graduation she presented a portfolio of jittery “idea drawings” to The New Yorker and quickly became one of about 40 cartoonists who submit work on a weekly basis. Chast’s cartoons also appear on the covers of upscale direct mail catalogues, on www.cartoonbank.com and in magazines such as The Sciences, Harvard Business Review and Fast Company, among others. In addition to her own compendium Childproof: Cartoons About Parents and Children (1997, Hyperion), the Connecticut-based artist has written or illustrated more than a dozen books.
