Julie Mehretu has earned international recognition for her spectacular large-scale paintings, which reference modernist architecture, meteorology, graffiti, cartography and public spaces. Her work is included in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, MoMA, the Whitney Museum and the Smithsonian, among others, and in 2005 she received both a MacArthur fellowship and the Whitney’s American Art Award. Today, the native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia lives and works in New York.
