Once looked down on as second-rate silver, pewter has enjoyed a modern revival thanks in part to designer David Reiss. He founded Match in 1995 after visiting Italy and discovering that the alloy was still a living, evolving medium there, used by artisans in high-quality pieces that break the traditional mold. While Reiss acknowledges that pewter has, “an old soul,” and, “speaks of days past,” he also finds that it adapts well to contemporary aesthetics. Match pieces were the first Italian pewter wares available in the US and continue to be made in the northern Dolomite region. Since modern pewter is lead-free, all Match tableware is FDA-approved as safe to use for eating and drinking.
